State Highpoints – Arizona - 12,633-foot Humphreys Peak Arizona’s highest peak and the 12th highest US state summit, 12,633-foot Humphreys Peak, is a popular hike in summer to escape the heat. Humphreys is located north of Flagstaff and south of the Grand Canyon, in north central Arizona. Humphreys, an island in the sky, is visible for long distance in every direction. It’s easily visible from the Flagstaff area, and you can see it from Highway 160 when approaching from the northeast. With 6,053 feet of prominence, Humphreys is an ultra prominent peak, however it is not the most prominent peak in Arizona. That honor goes to Mount Graham that has 6,340 feet of prominence. Starting at the Arizona Snow Bowl Ski Area southwest of the peak, Humphreys offers a fairly simple summer hike to the top. There is a trail up to the summit ridge at 11,800 feet south of the summit. The ridge hike to the summit does involve a little rock hopping. The nearby peak Agassiz has been off limits for environmental reasons for many years, so don’t go there. Also, hiking off of the trail is prohibited, dogs must be leashed on the trail, and camping is not allowed above 11,100 feet. The elevation gain for the hike is 3,400 feet and the round trip distance required is 10 miles. Since the road is plowed to the Snow Bowl Ski Area in the winter, many aspirants make a winter ascent of Humphreys.
