West Virginia’s highest peak and the 24th highest US state summit, 4,861-foot Spruce Knob is located in the central east portion of West Virginia, near the Virginia border, about 10 miles west of Riverton, West Virginia. With 2,971 feet of prominence, Spruce Knob is the most prominent peak in West Virginia, and one of only 2 P2Ks in the state. Spruce Knob is a drive up, and is wheelchair accessible. To reach the parking lot for Spruce Knob, go to Seneca Rocks, WV, and find the intersection of US 33 and State Roads 55 and 28. Go 9.8 miles south on US 33/SR 55&28. Just beyond the town of Riverton, look for a sign for the right turn to Spruce Knob. Turn right onto the paved but narrow Briery Gap Road, and go 1.8 miles to a T intersection. Turn left here and follow Briery Gap Road for a total of 9.9 miles from US 33. Take a signed right turn for the Spruce Knob Tower, and go 1.7 miles to the parking lot for the tower. To reach the tower from the parking lot, follow the flat, gravel trail for about 300 yards southwest to the tower. This trail is wheelchair accessible. The highest natural ground is about 53 feet east-northeast of the tower. For a little more exercise, continue on the trail as it loops around back to the parking lot. The views from this summit area are expansive, and the loop hike will expand your horizons.
