State Highpoints – North Dakota - 3,506-foot White Butte

North Dakota’s highest peak and the 30th highest US state summit, 3,506-foot White Butte is located in the southwest portion of North Dakota. With 551 feet of prominence, White Butte is only the 6th most prominent peak in North Dakota. White Butte requires a hike. To reach White Butte, go to Bowman, ND, and drive north then east on US 85 to Amidon. Go 1.9 miles east past Amidon’s Main Street on US 85, and turn right (south) onto a gravel road with a cemetery on your right. Continue past mile marker 43 to a white house on your left, and turn right (south) on another gravel road. Go 4.9 miles on this road, turn left and follow tire tracks on the west side of a fence. Go 0.8 mile, and park by some signs.

From the parking spot, hike south on the west side of the fence. You can see the highpoint ahead of you from here. Continue south, then climb a steep hill. The trail turns west then crosses another east/west fence. Hike uphill through a grove of trees, then bear right up a drainage to a saddle. Turn left and climb to the easily seen highpoint. The views from here are unique.

2014 - Amount of financial assistance: roughly $8,000

In 2018, the Highpointers Foundation secured an easement that
provides permanent public access to the North Dakota Highpoint.
