State Highpoints – Arkansas - 2,753-foot Magazine Mountain

Arkansas’ highest peak and the 34th highest US state summit, 2,753-foot Magazine Mountain is located in the northwest part of Arkansas. Magazine Mountain requires a short hike on a groomed trail. The highpoint of Magazine Mountain is also called Signal Hill, so watch for both signs. With 2,143 feet of prominence, Magazine Mountain is the most prominent peak in Arkansas.

To get to Magazine Mountain, go to Paris, Arkansas on State Highway 22. Turn south on State Highway 309 (Elm Street), go 1.0 mile, and bear left at a fork. Look for a sign that reads “Magazine Mtn. Rec. Area 17 mi.” Follow the Mt. Magazine Scenic Byway, pass Cove Lake after 8.8 miles, pass the Corley Cemetery, and reach the Greenfield Picnic Area on your left. Turn right onto a paved road that leads to Cameron Bluff and Signal Hill Trail. This is Forest Road 1606. Go 1.4 miles on this road, turn right, and follow signs to Mt. Magazine Tower and Cameron Bluff Campground. Drive another 0.5 mile and reach the trailhead on your left. There is a sign here for the Signal Hill Trail. Turn right onto a paved road to the Cameron Bluff campsites, and park where there is space. Now for your short walk to the actual highpoint.

Follow the trail signed for Signal Hill into the forest. The trail rises gently to reach the highpoint marker after only 0.25 mile. The highpoint is called Signal Hill.
