Alabama’a highest peak and the 35th highest US state summit, 2,407-foot Cheaha Mountain is located in the eastern part of the state, just south of Interstate 20. Cheaha Mountain is a drive up, and is wheelchair accessible. With 1,437 feet of prominence, Cheaha Mountain is the most prominent peak in Alabama.

Cheaha is an indian word meaning “high.” To get to Cheaha Mountain, go on Interstate 20,  take Exit 191, and go south on US 431 signed for “Cheaha State Park.” Go south on US 431 for 3.5 miles, and turn right at the sign “To 281.” Go west on this road for 0.6 mile to the stop sign at the end of the road. Turn left at this stop sign onto State Road 281, and go south on SR 281 for 11.7 miles to the State Park entrance. There is an entrance fee at this gate, and this gate is locked from 9:00 PM to 8 AM every night. Bear right after the gate on a one-way road for a mile to a sign on your left for “Picnic Area Tower.” Turn southwest here and park in the area across from the radio tower. The high point is by the stone building housing the tower.

There is a USGS benchmark on the rough stone walkway leading to the main door of the Observation Tower. The highest natural point is to the left of the entrance to the building as you face the building. There is also a sign marking the highpoint.
