State Highpoints – Illinois - 1,235-foot Charles Mound

Illinois’ highest spot and the 45th highest US state summit, 1,235-foot Charles Mound is located in Illinois’ northwest quadrant, west of Rockford, and close to the Wisconsin border. With only 95 feet of prominence, Charles Mound is an unranked summit, and is far down on the list of the most prominent peaks in Illinois. This highpoint is on private property, and access is limited to the first weekend of June, July, August, and September. This highpoint requires a walk up a road to reach the highest ground that is near the house on top of Charles Mound. This highpoint is wheelchair accessible, probably with some assistance.

To get to Charles Mound by car, go to the town of Debuque, IL, and go 28 miles west on State Highway 11. If you are in the town of Monroe, WI, go 27 miles west to the town of Shullsburg, WI, and turn south on WI County Road O. Go 3 miles on CR O, and pass a sign that says that Scales Mound is another 4 miles. CR O will then cross into Illinois, and the road is renamed at the border. Enter the town of Scales Mound, and reach a 4-way stop, that is the intersection with Charles Mound Avenue, turn left (east) on Charles Mound Avenue, and go 0.5 mile. Follow the road as it turns north for 0.5 mile, then back east for 0.6 mile. Continue on the road for another 0.3 mile, and look for a mailbox on your left labeled Wayne W. Wuebbels & Assoc. Park near here.

Walk up the driveway for 1.1 miles, and stop before you reach the house. The highpoint area is to your right. The highpoint area is adorned with signs and other interesting artifacts, You can see three states from this area; IL at your feet, WI to the north, and IA to the west-southwest. Sit in the chairs provided, and enjoy the serenity of the surrounding farm country. Please respect the private house, and do not approach it.
