As told by Michael Chessler:
“There are many stories and legends about Fred Beckey, the most persistent of which is that he has a ‘black book’ of unclimbed routes that he intends to climb some day. Fred told me once that he really has such a book, except that it is not really a book, it is a really huge collection of files that he keeps in FedEx envelopes, so they don’t fall out and get lost! This new book by Fred Beckey is probably the closest we will get to an autobiography of the great man, describing the 100 most memorable climbs he has ticked off from the thousands in his black book. Some of the climbs are major peaks, such as the first ascent of Mount Hunter (with Heinrich Harrer no less!), the third highest peak in the Alaska Range near Denali. Others are shorter climbs in the North Cascades and Canadian mountains, two ranges he can rightfully call his own.”

Beckey probably has more true first ascents than any human being, alive or deceased. He is rumored to have been the first person on top of literally hundreds of peaks in the western US and Canada, including in Alaska. He owns many more first ascents of specific difficult routes on previously climbed peaks. Born in 1923, he is now close to 90. He still climbs frequently. His guidebooks to the North Cascades and other ranges are still in demand decades after he published them.
