What:    Everest - The West Ridge by Thomas Hornbein
50th Anniversary edition

Signed by Tom Hornbein and Jon Krakauer!

In 1963, Jim Whittaker became the first American to summit Everest via the South Col Route. Two weeks after Whittaker’s achievement, Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld, fellow American mountaineers on the same expedition, became the first climbers ever to summit the world’s highest peak via the dangerous and forbidding West Ridge - a route on which only a handful of climbers have since succeeded. Traversing the mountain, they descended to the South Col, an absurd accomplishment rarely done since.

This special 50th anniversary edition reintroduces the adventure in a larger format with 150 full-color photographs by members of the expedition, including leader Norman G. Dyhrenfurth and team doctor Jim Lester. In addition to a new foreword by Jon Krakauer, this volume also features a new preface by Tom Hornbein. Updated biographies of all the American Mount Everest Expedition team members, written by climber Broughton Coburn, are now accompanied by contemporary portraits from the expedition.

Through the end of the 2012 season approximately 1,000 people have summited Everest. Of the 1,000 only 14 climbers have summited via the West Ridge while 16 climbers have died either attempting an ascent or attempting a descent via the West Ridge. In other words, there have been more fatalities on the route than successful ascents. Truly a dangerous route. On the night of the Unsoeld-Hornbein ascent (May 22, 1963) four climbers (Unsoeld, Hornbein, Barry Bishop, and Lute Jerstad) survived a bivy at 28,000 feet near the summit of Everest. Tom Hornbein’s book has been selected one of the “100 Best Adventure Books of All Time” by National Geographic Adventure magazine. Hornbein and Krakauer, who both live in Estes Park, CO, are climbing buddies. A few years ago Krakauer led Hornbein, then age 79, on a successful climb of Devils Tower in Wyoming.
