At 11:30 am local time on May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary, “... looked upward to see
a narrow snow ridge running up to a snowy summit. A few more whacks of the ice ax
in the firm snow and we stood on top. ... I looked at Tenzing and in spite of the balaclava,
goggles, and oxygen mask all encrusted with long icicles that concealed his face,
there was no disguising his infectious grin of pure delight as he looked all around him.
We shook hands and then Tenzing threw his arm around my shoulders and we thumped each other
on the back until we were almost breathless.”
Few dispute that the first ascent of Mount Everest was, and remains, the most momentous moment
in mountaineering history. A war-torn society took a joyous tick upward,
and Hillary and Tenzing were heralded as heroes.
When the July issue of Life Magazine arrived,
it brought color photos and the story of the famous climb into American living rooms.
It sparked the imagination of millions.
In particular, this issue of Life, plucked from his parent’s bed at the age of 10,
launched this website’s manager on a quest that took him to Everest’s summit 30 years later.
Gerry descended to greet Hillary and Tenzing at the 30-year reunion festivities in the Khumbu.
When Gerry told Hillary that he had just come from the top, Hillary asked, “What was it like up there?”
Gerry replied, “Sir Ed, it’s just as you remember!” Hillary raised his eyes from the festivities
and cast a memory infused gaze toward the summit.
