Highpointers Foundation Silent Auction

A fundraising event to benefit the Highpointers Foundation

What:    Reinhold Messner – To The Top Of The World

A profusely illustrated narrative by the world renowned climber Reinhold Messner that documents his most spectacular and unique mountaineering achievements. He focusses on the most severe test of his abilities: Manaslu, both Gasherbrums, K2, Nanga Parbat, and what led him to climb Everest solo.

It’s easy to write or read a sentence that says Messner soloed Everest without oxygen, but the reality is acutely astonishing. Many consider Messner’s solo climb of Everest in 1980 to be the still-point of success on Everest.

Later, Messner wrote, “Climbing Everest solo without bottled oxygen in 1980 was the hardest thing I’ve done. I was alone up there, completely alone ... Mallory said he climbed Everest because it was there. I think we go up so we can come back down again. This coming down is a very strong experience. You come back from an inhuman place. We are not made for it, this loneliness and cold. When you come back you feel reborn, you have a new chance. The experience is so strong you want to have it again and again, but you have to suffer for it. It’s addictive.”
